City Break in Riga

Holidays in Riga

Riga is an exciting, pulsing and flamboyant city which has recently shot into the tourist brochures. After decades of Soviet rule it is once again returning to its former glory. This ancient city has a wealth of culture. The spires of churches and the cathedral punctuate the city’s skyline and the castle looks out over the port keeping watch of the city.

The Dom Cathedral is one of the highlights of the city and it includes a 6500 pipe organ. Built in 1211 it is a great place to come to hear concerts with the organ acting as a grand centrepiece. Over the years the city has been occupied by several nations with each of these capturing and taking control of the castle. These days it is home to the President of Latvia and a couple of museums.

About Riga

Riga is the capital city of the Baltic state of Latvia. It has a population of just under a million and is home to around a third of the Latvian population. The country is bordered by the other Baltic states of Estonia and Lithuania. Riga is the largest and most cosmopolitan city in the Baltic States and is the cultural and economic heart of the country.

This former trading city once made all of its money from being a key port in the Hanseatic. Because of its prime position other countries have fought over the years for control of the city. This has seen a turbulent past for the city with control swapping between Polish, German, Swedish and Russian nations. Even today the majority of the population are Russian in the capital.

Riga Attractions

For a real insight into the city head to the ethnographic museum which charts the country’s past and what it used to be like. For views of the city head to St Peter’s church where you can get amazing views of the city from the observation platform. To see the remains of the Soviet regime head to the central market which is housed in Zeppelin hangars. Not to be missed is the nightlife which is fantastic. Have a romantic meal and enjoy a bottle of local wine, as good as France without the price tag.

Riga Weather

Riga has a northern position which makes it extremely cold during the winter. During December, January and February the temperatures are below freezing and there is snow on the ground. The spring and summers are mild with plenty of daylight.
