City Break in Venice

Holidays in Venice

The endearing Italian city of Venice remains one of the most romantic cities in the world. Here you will find the Grand Canal the Rialto Bridge and Saint Mark’s Basilica. Take a trip along the canal at sunset as the city is bathed in the warm light of the afternoon sun and take in the atmosphere. Copied by many cities, Venice has never been beaten.

To catch the city at its best why not visit during the annual Carnival. Started in the 12th century people have been flocking to the city ever since to take part in the masked ball. The fun begins at the end of January and is a great chance to see the city in festive spirits. Watch the street performers, listen to musicians and go to the opera and theatre. Throughout February people fill the streets dressed in gowns and masks.

About Venice

Venice lies in the north of Italy and has reclaimed marshland in a large saltwater lagoon. The population of the city is around a quarter of a million with around 60,000 living in the centre. The canals of the city connect the individual parts acting like the roads of other cities. The famous Grand Canal splits the city in half and is bridged in 3 places.

With its position at the head of the Adriatic the city held an important position and was a strong naval power. The city also enjoyed a brisk trade in goods such as silk, spices and art. The city is split into 6 districts known as sestiere which are Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Santa Croce, San Marco and Castello.

Venice Attractions

Venice is filled with romantic things to do like a sunset gondola trip along the Grand Canal passing under the famous Rialto Bridge. Visit Saint Mark’s Basilica and Square which are both in the San Marco sestiere. Stroll through the narrow streets and stop to buy glassware and ball masks as souvenirs. Have some food and a nice meal and let the atmosphere of this romantic city wash over you.

Venice Weather

April to October is the peak tourist season in Venice with pleasant weather. During the summer temperatures stay in the 30’s while in the winter they can drop to freezing. In the autumn and spring the city is liable to flood so you should bring some waterproof clothing and footwear. Winter can be a good time to visit to avoid the crowds and get a good deal on accommodation.
